About Us
The site we use is on Hayling Island in Hampshire, UK. Membership is restricted in numbers and at present we are full, however we do have a waiting list for those who wish to put their name down. Only helicopters fly at the site as there are plenty of clubs specialising in fixed wing. We have a strict set of rules and guidelines which are safety orientated.
Hayling Heli's was originally formed as a group with one member holding key control over all decisions that were made but has now formed a panel of 'excecutive members' to carry the day to day running and management of the club over many shoulders.
The group was formed in December 2000, just as the bad weather set in and like most, we were unable to fly. Following this, 'Foot and Mouth' took it's toll and the field was put 'off limits' by the farmer. However, we did manage to find a temporary site in the middle of 2001 which was dry, flat and had a nice mown surface. This suited the beginners but had very limited air space for the experienced pilot; due to some rows of trees which surrounded the area, however, it gave the beginners a chance to learn to hover and kept the group operational.
In February of 2002 we finally got clearance from the farmer for full use of our original site and decided that, weather permitting, we would cut a patch sometime before the end of the month; flying was to commence on March 1st 2001.
The site is very large and surrounded by other fields which are used only for occasional grazing. We're able to get vehicles to the corner of the site and have set out a good 'no fly zone', away from parked cars etc. The experienced pilots have plenty of air space. In order to minimise problems with frequencies, we have a specific peg board with all the frequency pegs on hooks, if the peg has been removed, then that frequency is being used. This works very well.
